Smile - Episode Six

The Land Rover screeched to a halt across the funeral parlour’s driveway. Barbara and Christopher both jumped out and ran to the entrance. The door locked but Barbara noticed it was very old and made of wood; so she backed up a little then charged towards it with all her might and all her weight behind her. The door didn’t stand a chance. After Christopher helped Barbara to her feet again he located and turned on the light switch. It wasn’t particularly bright but was enough to let them see what they were doing. “Which way do you think it is to the basement Chris?” Barbara asked. “I think I went past the door when Jacob took me to see the caskets.” Christopher looked this way and that to get his bearing.  “Through there I think?” “Right let’s go then, there doesn’t seem to be anyone up here anyway.” The door to the basement was unlocked. There was no trepidation for the two of them when they threw open the door and ran down the stairs, hopefully to find Peter an...

Barbara kept her distance from the hearse as it slowly drove through town. Christoper had been quiet the whole journey and it annoyed Barbara enough that she decided to put a stop to it.   “So Chris, you going to tell me what happened between you and Pete?” Barbara asked, not leaving her sights off the hearse a few cars in front for a second. “We had an argument; I said things I shouldn’t have said and then he said it was over.” “So, why are you still here?” “Oh.” “I mean you didn’t leave so you think there’s still a chance, right?” Barbara turned to Christopher for a second. “You do want to stay together don’t you?” “Honestly I don’t know. I want to talk when this is all over, if he’ll let me.” “You need to get him when he can’t go anywhere, then he’ll have no choice but to talk.” “How am I going to do that?” “I’ll tie him up if I have to.” “I think you’ll have to.” “He’s not a bad bean I’m sure. He just seems a bit wayward. Not unlike a ce...

Smile - Episode Four

Peter and Betty sat giggling on the sofa, intoxicated by the smoke that was even now swirling around the entire cottage. Peter had been trying to probe Betty on their past misadventures. “What’s with Brighton Pier then? Is it haunted or something?” Peter asked. “It’s not the pier you are thinking of, it’s the other one.” “The one that burnt down?” “Yes, every now and then it sort of comes back.” “What?”   “Don’t ask me how. Barbara’s better at technical things, I’m more earthy.” “If you don’t know how, do you know why?” “Yes, sort of, well no. Barbara says it’s caught in some kind of time trap thingie. All I know is it’s never for very long; every time we almost work it out; a mysterious cloaked figure stops us and then it disappears again. We’ll work it out next time.” “Right, any other tales you’re allowed to tell me?” “There were the mechanical maniacal Morris dancers, and crikey could they move. A right handful!” “And a mouthful, Try saying t...
